My name is Roland Wenzel, and I am currently a graduate student at the Department of Computer Science of Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. Last year, I returned from one year of studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.

I finished my undergraduate studies for a joint masters degree in computer science and business administration after only three semesters at Darmstadt University of Technology, where I also expect to complete my Masters degree in the near future.

During my time at UBC, I took an interest in the area of machine learning with focus on probabilistic methods to solve the problem of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in mobile robotics. I was working as a research assistant at LCI, the Laboratory for Computational Intelligence, under the supervision of Prof Nando de Freitas.

I spent the summer 2003 as researcher at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. My goal was to develop a linear time algorithm to solve the SLAM problem with the least amount of approximation. We came up with an algorithm which is linear in the number of observed landmarks, and which shows remarkable efficiency compared to other algorithms.

At present, I am continuing my studies at Darmstadt University of Technology.

In my spare time, I am currently learning Japanese as my fifth language. I am 25 years old.
